There are times when you need to capture the desktop and save it as a video file instead of actually grabbing a single snapshot of it. That's because you can't show how a software behaves just by taking a snapshop of its window. Filming it and saving the capture as video file is a better idea. Besides that, capturing the desktop as a video file allows you to create various tutorial movies for showing how a program works. Unfortunately, Windows doesn't have a feature for recording the desktop, just taking screenshots of it.

Stone Screen Recorder is a software which can record the desktop and save it as a video file. This intuitively named Windows program is simple to install and requires little system resources. When launching the program, the user must first select which part of the desktop should be recorded, either all of it or a certain area. Recording a certain area of the desktop allows focusing on a certain application and also producing a video file which takes up less hard disk space. After selecting the desired area to be captured, the user can choose the video format used for capturing. Stone Screen Recorder supports four of the most used video formats, like WMV, AVI, FLV or MP4. The last two allow easily uploading the video to video sharing websites like YouTube.

After selecting the desired format, the user just needs to select the output folder and he's ready to start capturing the desktop. This can be done either by using the program's graphical buttons or by using shortcut keys which can be customized. These keys can be used for starting and also for stopping a recording.

A feature that is not present in other screen recording applications is the possibility to capture the desktop in a DirectX mode. This allows recording virtually any running game. Besides recording the desktop, Stone Screen Recorder can also record audio using various sources, like line-in, microphone or any sound that passes through the sound card.
